Backlinks or inbound links are very important in the eyes of search engines, if a site links to yours in effect its casting a vote for your website, the quality of links varies from page to page some links are more beneficial than others, Google has what is known as page rank (PR) this determines how important Google see's a page to be, so if you have a few inbound links from sites/pages with high PR of say 4 or 5 it will have more effect on your search position than 100 links from sites with 0 PR. Think quality rather than quantity.

Building up your links can be quite an easy process initially, use your suppliers, partners and even customers for link exchanges most companies are willing to exchange links with you as long as you are not in direct competition with them.

Try to stay away from "link farms" they usually have no page rank and Google hates them and labels the links they generate as spam. In fact, Google hates them so much that some sites get removed from the index if they're affiliated with link farms. Spooked, some webmasters are considering removing all outbound links from their sites.

A quick note about Google removing your site for links, any site that links to you will not have any adverse effect on your ranking as you cannot control who links to you so this would be unfair, however if you have an outbound link to a "blacklisted" link farm Google may look upon your site as spam, so just take a little caution to who you do choose to link to, as you will probably get many requests from around the world for link exchanges.

Another key factor of link building is try to make sure that sites linking to you have some relevance to your site, cross-linking is a basic tenet of the internet, links are fine even encouraged if they are related to your topic, but link farms rarely provide useful content to visitors, thus classed as spam in the eyes of the almighty Googlebot!
